“Moved by Mountains and the Sea in Indonesia” is a photo essay written by Keri McDonald of New York Times magazine, published March 16th, 2015. The photos were taken by Rony Zakaria. The link is below:
This photo essay is simply about the relationship between the people of Indonesia and the beautiful nature al around them. Not all the pictures include the sea or the mountains, but almost all contain evidence of men being near the land, if it shows a village, or simply there is a focus on the native people who are there. This essay tries to capture how all of these people are very focused on nature and try to get closer and closer to it.
This essay was interesting to me due to its focus not only on nature, but on the relationships the people have with this great looking nature. It was a great way to combine portraits and landscapes in a way that makes it all blend together into a cohesive story. I loved the choice of black and white instead of color, giving the people a look as though they are truly one with nature. From a far distance they would simply look like part of the mountains or sea. The point of the essay just makes the viewers see the how nature is truly an interesting thing to all of the people, many of them taking time to focus on nature alone.
I liked the use of minimal contrast of these photos and how they appeared to blend the people right along with the image. With the simple use of natural light, it made the images seem that much more natural, capturing how the art was supposed to look. The theme behind the images is very consistent giving it the look of a very composed story, making it very cohesive, as i said earlier. I think that the far out proximity of the images was very effective in making all the people look great, as well as the background behind them. All the different grays don’t tend to distract from the setting that is so well put together, which i only imagine the people would do with colored clothing.
